Ik heb mijn verjaardagscadeautje uitgepakt. Twee maanden geleden verjaarde ik en kreeg van Gade als cadeau een chique overnachting in een Haags tophotel met een voorstelling van het Nederlands Danstheater. Afgelopen vrijdagmiddag reisden we af. Dat had nog heel wat voeten in aarde, want Gades reismogelijkheden waren verspreid over twee OV-kaarten en niet helemaal duidelijk was wat nu op welke kaart stond. Zelfs de behulpzame NS-medewerkers kwamen er niet uit en meldden bovendien dat er een storing was in het ophalen van keuzedagen. Bij controle in de trein bleek er niets aan de hand. Het hotel kenden Gade en ik van de door ons gewaardeerde serie “Heer en Meester”. Meer nog dan ik dacht een deftig hotel te betreden, had ik het idee het decor van de serie binnen te stappen. Ik verwachtte elk ogenblik de hoofdpersoon tegen het lijf te lopen of achter de balie het vertrouwde gezicht van Leo de conciërge uit de serie te zien. Jaren geleden had ik er ooit eens thee gedronken, maar nooit had ik overnacht. De receptionist meldde dat hij voor ons een mooie kamer had met zich op het Malieveld. We liepen naar een Frans restaurant, proefden niertjes, wandelden naar een theater wat bijna niet leek te bestaan ( “Theater aan het Spui, nee nooit van gehoord”, zei de geboortige Hagenaar, terwijl we er vlak bij stonden) en zagen fraai ballet, sliepen in het deftige hotel en bezochten de volgende dag het vernieuwde Mauritshuis. We genoten van een lunch en van elkaar. Hiep, hiep, hoera, zong Gade in de trein terug. Het cadeautje was helemaal uitgepakt. Ik hoop zo nog lang te leven.
